Q&A – What is drilling holes in the trunk of my tree?

Question:
What is drilling holes in the trunk of my tree?

Answer:
These holes are from a woodpecker. University of Memphis Director of Landscape Joellen Dimond says the yellow-bellied sapsucker pecks the holes and then returns every so often to eat the sap that has collected. It also eats any insects that are attracted to or get stuck in the sap. It does not harm the tree and she recommends getting a pair of binoculars to watch the woodpecker.
