Q&A – What is the fuzz on my lilac trees and how do I get rid of it?
Question:
The last few years my Lilac trees have developed a fuzz. The fuzz appears after the heat and humidity arrive. It does not seem to affect the spring bloom, but it makes the trees look sickly and bad all summer. What is the fuzz on my lilac trees and how can I get rid of it?
Answer:
The fuzz is powdery mildew. While it will not kill the tree, it is unsightly and will reduce the number of blooms the next spring. This spring and early summer were very wet and that is the ideal conditions for the powdery mildew to grow. To prevent powdery mildew, you will need to spray the plant every seven to ten days through the growing season with a fungicide.
