Q&A – What will get rid of Johnson Grass?

Question:
I have a vegetable garden and I have a lot of johnson grass taking over my garden area. I have attempted to plow during the coldest winter weather (temps in the teens) in an attempt to freeze the root structure and have made no progress. What will get rid of Johnson Grass in my large vegetable garden?

Answer:
Johnson grass is hard to get rid of. One plant produces up to 80,000 seeds, and it also reproduces through rhizomes. Pulling it as it comes up, and trying to get out the rhizomes as you pull will eventually eliminate it. You can use chemicals but it will require multiple applications. TSU Extension Agent Joellen Dimond had this same problem in her garden and tells what she did.
