Q&A – What’s the best way to kill grubs?

Question:
What’s the best way to kill grubs in my lawn and flower beds?

Answer:
Grubs are the larvae of the May and June beetles. Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison says there is an economic threshold to treating for grubs – a few grubs won’t create enough damage to justify the expense of treatment. The threshold is 5-10 per square foot. There are a number of treatment options available including Grub-X (imidacloprid), trichlorfon, beta-cyfluthrin, and chlorantraniliprole. There are also milky spore and nematodes available as an organic option. In Mike’s 30-year career as an extension agent he only saw two cases where grub treatment was warranted.
