Q&A – When is the best time to scalp Bermuda grass?

Question:
I have common Bermuda grass. When is the best time to scalp Bermuda grass? And how much of the existing grass do you recommend be removed?

Answer:
Most turf grass maintenance people will tell you to never scalp your grass. Sometimes grass is scalped in athletic fields to force it to knit together. Bermuda grass will come out of dormancy and grow by its self. If you do scalp Bermuda, do it just as it comes out of dormancy. Also, fertilize the grass right after scalping.
