Q&A – When should I prune blueberries and how much?
Question:
When is the best time to prune blueberries and how much should I prune?
Answer:
Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison says that late winter or early spring is the best time to prune blueberries. Blueberries don’t need to be pruned. The only reason Mike would prune them is because they are getting too tall or are in the way. He also says that you need to prune them in the right place. The plant will start growing from where you pruned so if you want the plant to be 6 feet tall don’t prune at the six-foot level. Go down into the plant and make your cut three to four feet above the ground. The only time Mike heavily prunes blueberries is at planting.
