Q&A – When should I use pre-emerge in the spring?

Question:
When should I put down a spring pre-emerge to kill weeds in my lawn?

Answer:
UT Extension Agent Chris Cooper says that in the Mid-South you should apply the pre-emergent herbicide in late February. Pre-emergent needs to be watered-in to be effective, and there was rain in February. Pre-emergent is used primarily to stop crabgrass and goosegrass from growing in your lawn. Those weeds start germinating about the time the forsythia blooms, so you should have the pre-emergent down by then.
