Q&A – Why are my tomatoes misshapen and cracking?

Question:
Why are my tomatoes misshapen and cracking?

Answer:
Cat facing is the most common way a tomato can be misshapen. This is where there are seams or cracks on the bottom of the fruit. UT Assistant Professor of Residential and Consumer Horticulture Natalie Bumgarner explains that this is often caused by cold temperatures during bloom. Another type of cracking, cracking of the skin can be caused by extremes in soil moisture as the fruit is developing.
