Q&A – Why are the hydrangeas in my town turning from blue to pink?

Question:
Why are the hydrangeas in my town turning from blue to pink?

Answer:

Hydrangea flower color is dependent on the pH of the soil. University of Memphis Director of Landscape Joellen Dimond says the change is because the pH is slowly moving from acid towards basic. She says this could be because mulch around the plants is decomposing, and decomposed organic matter has a neutral pH. You can add soil acidifier to help get the blue color back.
