Q&A – Why are there bumps on my pecan leaves?

Question:
"I have little nodes on the leaves of my 3 year old pecan tree seedlings. Are they harmful and if so, what do I need to do to treat them?"

Answer:
This is the gall the tree forms because of the insect phylloxera which looks like an aphid. Once the phylloxera is in the gall, it is impossible to kill with an insecticide. To control phylloxera you must spray when the buds are about a half an inch long. UT Extension Agent Chris Cooper explains what to spray.
