Q&A – Is it too late to thin my peaches?
Question:
My peach crop usually gets bit by a late freeze so I usually don’t thin. I have a bumper crop of peaches this year. The peaches are about 1 to 2 inches and the branches are weighed down. I know I need to get rid of some fruit. This late in the year will I be helping fruit quality and size by thinning my peaches?
Answer:
Thinning should have been done in the spring. TSU Extension Agent Joellen Dimond recommends thinning now. This will avoid limbs breaking under the weight as the fruit matures. She recommends thinning to at most one fruit every four inches.
