Q&A –What is this grass growing in my vegetable garden? A: Nutsedge
Question:
I have grass growing in my vegetable garden. What kind is it?
Answer:
This is Nutsedge or nutgrass. It is not a grass but a sedge. Nutsedge is hard to get rid of. Rick Pudwell, Director of Horticulture at Memphis Botanic Garden recommends smothering it with cardboard during the vegetable growing season and then, once you are past harvest attack it with a herbicide like Image that is labeled to kill nutsedge. That way you keep the chemicals off the garden while the vegetables are growing.
