Q&A - What are these patterns on my lawn?
Question:
This fall, these designs showed up in my yard. I have never seen this before. Eventually, all the grass turned gray. What caused this?
Answer:
These patterns are caused by frost and are seen most in thick stands of warm season turf. As the air cools for the first frost, the differences in air temperature caused by differences in the amount of heat the soil releases in small areas cause some of the grass to freeze and turn brown. The parts of the grass that did not freeze stay green but will likely be killed by the next frost. This does not harm the grass.
