Q&A - Why are the leaves of my cauliflower yellow?

Question:
I planted some cabbage and cauliflower a few weeks ago from starts. My cabbage look happy, but most of the cauliflower plants have yellow on the leaves and look kind of sickly. What is going on?

Answer:
There are several potential problems with the cauliflower. The problem may be a lack of magnesium which can be fixed by adding some Epsom salts to the soil. Another possible problem is that the cauliflower does not have enough drainage.  A way to solve this problem is by planting each cauliflower plant on a small mound. The problem may also be a lack of nitrogen in the soil which also manifests itself in yellow leaves.  Side dressing with a nitrogen fertilizer will add the necessary nitrogen back into the soil.
