Starting Vegetable Seeds Indoors
Starting seeds indoors gives you a head start to your vegetable garden. UT Extension Agent Lee Sammons III talks about what to do to start seeds indoors. Generally speaking, you want to start seeds in a peat-based germination mix. You will use that in a container with good drainage. There are several commercially available seed starting kits or you can use your own. Vegetable seeds germinate best at about 75 degrees. Most seed packages tell the temperature and timing of the seed planting. Light is important to any plant. You need enough light to keep the plants from getting leggy. You can use grow lights or a greenhouse. Before you take the seedlings outside make sure you harden them off by getting them used to the varying temperatures and light conditions outside.
