May Gardening To Do List

Plant

  • Annuals and perennials early in the month
  • Warm season vegetables (seeds and transplants)
  • Caladiums
  • Zinnia seeds
  • Continue planting gladiolas every two weeks for a succession of blooms
  • Choose and plant crepe myrtles while in bloom so you can choose the desired color

Lawn Care

  • Seed bermuda grass
  • Fertilize bermuda and zoysia lawns with a complete fertilizer
  • Mow lawns approx. 2". Do not remove more than a third of the leaf blase at each mowing.
  • Consider using a mulching mower

Prune

  • Climbing roses at the end of the month

Other

  • To prevent leaf roller on cannas, drench the soil around them with with a systemic insecticide like imidacloprid
  • Remove seed pods from bulbs and irises
  • Water deeply during weeks with less than one inch of rain
  • Stake tall plants
