Blueberry and Blackberry
Spring Check-up
Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison gives a spring check-up to blueberry and blackberry plants and adds fertilizer. He starts by looking at the blueberries. They have been in the ground for one year. They look like they are doing well. Mike talks about what kind of fertilizer to use and then fertilizes the plants. He also mentions that later this year the soil needs to be pH tested and sulfur added to lower the pH if necessary. Also, the Bermuda grass around the plants needs to be killed.
The blackberries are also looking good. They were planted two years ago. Mike prunes off some dead canes and fertilizes. The blackberry plants will need some training to help them grow into the trellis. They should start multiplying rapidly in the next few years and filling the trellis.
