Cabbage
Cabbage is a popular cool season vegetable that is a member of the cole crop family. It is rich in many vitamins and minerals. There are four major members of the cabbage family: the familiar green cabbage, red cabbage, savoy cabbage which has crinkly leaves, and Chinese cabbage which includes bok choy. When planting cabbage enough space needs to be left between the plants to allow them to grow. 18-24 inches is usually needed. Cabbage is a heavy nitrogen feeder and requires fertilizer whether compost or artificial. To see if the cabbage is ready for harvest squeeze the head. It should be firm, it is not leave it for another week or two. Cabbage is attacked by several insects including the cabbage looper, imported cabbage worms, cut worms, aphids, harlequin bugs, flea beetles and cabbage maggots.
