Cutting Back Ornamental Grasses

Dead ornamental grasses can be beautiful in the winter garden, but before they start growing in the spring you should cut them back. University of Memphis Director of Landscape Joellen Dimond shows two ways to cut back grasses. The first - for large clumps of grass - uses a power hedge trimmer, the second - for small clumps - uses hand pruners. In each case you don’t want to cut them to the ground. The old dead growth will help hold up the new growth and give the plant a better shape. Also, don’t cut into any new green growth.
