Fall Vegetables
Fall cool season vegetables are planted in July. UT Extension Specialist, Walter Battle, talks about what vegetables to plant for fall garden. Walter’s information is for zone 7, but the dates can be adjusted to your zone. For a fall harvest cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower should be planted by seed in July but can be transplanted in early August. They all take about 60 days to mature, which puts harvest in October. They can all handle mild freezes. One of Walter’s favorites is turnip greens. They can be planted from August through September. They take about 30 days to harvest. He sows the seeds while he is broadcasting lime.
The summer garden may also be extended into fall gardening. Tomatoes can be often carried into November. They may need to be protected from mild frost to survive that long. In Memphis, the average frost date is November 13th. If the forecast predicts a good freeze Walter will harvest all the tomatoes. The green tomatoes he sets in the windowsill to ripen.
