Pruning Fig Trees

Garden expert Bill Colvard shows how to prune a neglected fig tree. It has been an unusually warm late winter and early spring so the fig tree started growing leaves but they were killed by a recent frost. The tree will be okay but right now you can’t tell how much of the branch will be effected by the frost. Bill talks about some of the things to look for and do while pruning and then he gets to work. He cuts off most of the branches coming from the base including all the ones growing horizontal. He leaves just a few stronger vertical branches. Then he shortens those branches so the tree will grow more full and less leggy. When he is done, the tree is much smaller but will be better looking and better suited for producing fruit.
