Q&A - How can I get rid of the ants in my flower bed?

Question:
I am having a terrible time with ants around my sidewalks and flower beds but don't have flowers in them. They are also in my strawberries along with slugs destroying them and my lettuces. How can I get rid of the ants in my flower beds?

Answer:
There are several ways to get rid of ants. Spraying is always an option but it will kill other insects too. Laurie Williams from Memphis Botanic Garden suggests using peppermint oil on the ground where you don’t want the ants. The ant colony will move to another place. David Glover, The Bartlett Bee Whisperer, ways that beekeepers sprinkle cinnamon around the edges of hives to keep the ants out.  Also, if you can disturb the area enough or keep the area very wet the ants will move. Or you can use baits which will kill the colony.
