Q&A - Should I fertilize shrubs in November?

Question:
Should I fertilize my shrubs and Japanese maples in November?

Answer:
November is a little late to be fertilizing shrubs and trees. It would encourage new green growth which would be killed by frost. UT Extension Horticultural Specialist Carol Reese says there is a place for fall fertilization to help the tree get nutrients for the next year but November is too late.
