Q&A – Should I fertilize my shrubs in the spring?

Question:
Should I fertilize my shrubs in the spring?

Answer:
Jim Crowder from Memphis Botanic Garden says that generally speaking, you do fertilize in the spring. There are some exceptions like azaleas. Jim fertilizes most perennials every 60 days or so. He also talks about the different fertilizers that are available. Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison talks about the importance of a soil test, so you will know what kind of fertilizer you need to use. They also talk about the importance of having the correct pH for your plants.
