Q&A - What is this fungus and will it hurt my tree?
Question:
I found this growing at the base of my pin oak. I pulled it off and threw it in the trash. Will it harm my tree?
Answer:
This is ganoderma or butt rot. It is a fungal infection of the tree. When you see it, it is to late to save the tree. The tree may still live many years but it will slowly die. The infection is secondary. A stressed tree allows the fungus to grow. A certified arborist can take a look at it and see how advanced the problem is.
