Q&A – Can I insulate my caladiums for the winter so I don’t have to dig them up?

Question:
Can I insulate my caladiums for the winter so I don’t have to dig them up?

Answer:
This probably won’t work. Joellen Dimond, Director of Landscape at the University of Memphis, says the reason you have to dig up caladiums is not the cold, but moisture. In the wet soil of winter they rot easily. She recommends planting the caladiums in a pot and then burying the pot. In fall you can pull the pot out of the ground and put it in the garage for the winter, then replant it in the spring.
