Q&A – How do I grow a garden in sand? What do I amend with?

Question:
How do I grow a garden in sand? What do I amend with?

Answer:

It is best to choose drought resistant native plants. University of Memphis Director of Landscape Joellen Dimond says the soil holds no water so the plants need to be able to tolerate that. Native plants would be best. If you want to amend the soil use some compost. The compost, or other organic material, will hold some water.
