Q&A – Is it possible to grow pistachios and cherries from seed in New Mexico?

Question:
Is it possible to grow pistachios and cherries from seed in New Mexico?

Answer:
You can grow both from seed but there are some things you need to do. University of Memphis Director of Landscape Joellen Dimond says you can grow cherries from seed, but they take a long time to grow. New Mexico Extension recommends sour cherry varieties in that area including Balaton and Danube. Pistachios are usually grafted. Joellen says you can grow the root part of the tree from seed but will then need to graft on a top. She references the New Mexico Extension publication “Growing Pistachios in New Mexico” available here: https://aces.nmsu.edu/pubs/_circulars/CR532/welcome.html
