Q&A – One of the branches of my Japanese maple appears to have died? What should I do?

Question:
One of the branches of my Japanese maple appears to have died? What should I do?

Answer:

It is still early in the spring. Wait for awhile to see if any leaves or growth appear on the branch. UT Extension Agent Chris Cooper says you can do a scratch test to see if there is any green tissue under the bark. If the branch is dead, it should be pruned off.

Here is a video about how to do a scratch test.
