Q&A – Should I plant my fig tree in clay or is there a better medium to use?

Question:
Should I plant my fig tree in clay or is there a better medium to use?

Answer:

You can add organic matter to the clay to improve the soil, but Retired MSU Extension Horticulture Specialist Lelia Kelly says there are some other things you need to do. Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison says you should check how the other plants in the yard are doing. If they are doing well, the fig tree should do well too. He says many people say they have clay when in fact they have a different soil type. He talks about SoilWeb, an online tool you can use to see what soil you have in your yard.
