Q&A - What is this bug that is on my Japanese maple trees? We lost a tree that they were on.

Question:
We put sod over fresh wood chips. Now the grass is dying. What can we do to save the grass?

Answer:

This is happening because the fresh wood chips are stealing all the nitrogen from the soil to decompose. University of Memphis Director of Landscape Joellen Dimond says until the chips break down, they will be using the nitrogen in the soil. She suggests putting some nitrogen fertilizer down in the area to supply the decomposing chips and the surrounding grass. She says the problem will eventually go away once the wood chips have broken down.
