Q&A – What is the best kind of sod to put under a tree and when should I lay it?

Question:
What is the best kind of sod to put under a tree and when should I lay it?

Answer:
Some warm season grasses do not do well in the shade under a tree. UT Extension Agent Booker T. Leigh recommends palisade or royal zoysia if the area gets 4 or more hours of sun. Lay zoysia sod in the spring or summer. He recommends a fescue if the area gets less than 4 hours of sun a day. Seed or lay fescue sod in the fall. Booker also says the soil under the tree looks compact. Before laying sod lightly till the soil to allow good root contact.
