Q&A – What is this rust like coating on my beans?
Question:
There is a 'rust-like' coating (or growth) on some of our beans this year. What is it and do we need to worry about it spreading throughout the patch?
Answer:
This is a fungus called rust. Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison says the fungus forms red and brown pustules on the leaves and pods. This is a common problem especially when the weather has been wet and humid. There are several fungicides that can be used to control rust. Keep in mind that the fungicide does not cure the existing problem – it will only keep if from spreading. Also, Mike says that the rust is not dangerous to eat so if you happen to have some on your harvest just get rid of the parts of the pods that have the problem.
