Q&A – Why do my rose petals
look burned?

Question:
My roses have flowers and the petals look burned.  The leaves are okay, and I have not seen any insects. What is going on? How can I fix it?

Answer:
This damage is probably caused by thrips. They are very small insects that feed on rose petals. You probably won’t be able to see them on the plant, but UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison gives a way to spot them with a piece of paper or handkerchief. Insecticidal soaps will kill thrips or you can use a systemic insecticide.
