Why does my new ninebark tree have large black spots
on the leaves?

The black spots are probably anthracnose. University of Memphis Director of Landscape Joellen Dimond says the lack of beautiful fall colors is likely because of environmental factors due to the plant being in a new place this year. Joellen gives some suggestions for improving the environment for the tree.
