Q&A – Why have my hydrangeas not bloomed in the last two years?

Question:
Why have my hydrangeas not bloomed in the last two years?

Answer:

These are Hydrangea macrophylla. UT Extension Agent Lee Sammons says a common reason these hydrangeas do not bloom is they have been pruned at the wrong time. Hydrangea macrophylla should be pruned in the summer right after they bloom. Lee explains why this is the case. Also, a year of not blooming may be because an especially cold winter froze the buds.
