Setting Live Animal Traps
Retired Extension Agent Mike Dennison shows how to set and bait a live animal trap for raccoons or possums. There are several different mechanisms for tripping the trap. This one uses a hook to release the door. Mike places bait in the back of the trap. He uses a can of tuna which raccoons love. Then he places the trap on the ground in a place where animals are less likely to to try to get the food from the side of the trap. He then drops chunks of tuna outside the trap and in the entrance to the trap. The idea is the raccoon would follow the path of food into the trap and trip the trap once inside. To prevent the spread of disease, many states do not allow the transportation of wild animals without a license. Contact your local wildlife agency or game warden to learn your local laws and regulations.
