Q&A – When will my persimmon tree start fruiting?

Question:
I started some persimmon trees from seed 7 or 8 years ago. They are around 20' tall and the trunks are about the diameter of a baseball. They have flowered the last 3 years but never have fruit. My neighbor has a mature persimmon about 60' from mine which fruits. When will my persimmon tree start fruiting?

Answer:
There are several kinds of persimmons. American persimmons are dioecious, meaning there are male trees and female trees. These could be male trees, so they won’t fruit. If they are American persimmon it takes 6-8 years before they start fruiting on a tree grown from seed – assuming it is a female.
