Q&A - How do I root a Leyland Cypress?

Question:
How do I root a Leyland Cypress?

Answer:
You can root Leyland cypress by cutting off a branch in the winter, dipping it rooting hormone and placing it in a peat moss pearlite mix and keeping it moist. TSU Extension Agent Joellen Dimond explains how.
Before you root a Leyland cypress remember that they are susceptible to Seiridium canker and will eventually die from that. If you are trying to take a cutting off a tree that is already infected the cutting will already have the disease. If you like the look of the Leyland cypress consider a false cypress (Chamaecyparis). Many of them have a similar look and do not suffer from the Seiridium canker.
