2/8/2022

Today we laid out the Family Plot square foot garden. Chris and Peter layed out the squares with twine and garden staples. They also put up the leaning trellis and planted onions and peas according to this year's garden plan.

Both onions and peas are planted 9 to a square in a grid. You want to leave some space around the edge of the square so the plants in the neighboring squares have space.

This is the plan for this year's garden. I have organized it by square foot, and then by season within the square foot.

The Colors are:
Blue - Spring
Green - Summer
Red - Fall

You can see the planting and harvest dates I have estimated and how many plants will fit in each square. I should be able to harvest and remove one crop before I plant another. Hopefully my timing works out.

I am planting the tall, strung up, plants on the north side so they don't block the sun. We will be putting in a trellis for them and leaning the trellis away from the bed to make more space.

We will be planting some running plants too. They will be trained to run into the gravel around the south and west sides of the garden.

I'm excited to try this out. I have not ever done a square foot garden. The closest I have come is wide row planting in a normal garden.

    Square Foot Garden

This year we are trying out square foot gardening. We will be growing a 4x8 garden and seeing what happens and finding out how much we can grow in such a small space.
